A Budapest Bike
Touring Budapest by bike is now much better much with the gradual introduction of proper bike lanes. There are now over 200 km of bike lanes in the city. In recent years, with the growth of bike culture, the city is making more of an effort to recognize issues of safety and respect from motorist. So doing Budapest by bike is very possible. It’s also healthier and faster. You’ll be able to cover lots of ground while still having the chance to stop and take a deeper look into any areas of interest. Here are some places worth checking out on two wheels:
Margit Island
This is the famous park in the middle of the river. Margit Island is best accessed via Margit Bridge. This also happens to offer stunning views of both banks of the river. Once on the island, the whole park is crossed with bike paths. Apart from a whole lot of open green space, there are bars, food stands, sports clubs, an aqua park and even a Japanese garden. Once you’ve checked them out, spread a blanket on the grass for a picnic.
Pest River Bank
Sticking close to the river, why not take a ride down the cycle paths that line the Pest side river bank. This gives you the chance to see some of Budapest’s most stunning and interesting sights. From the imposing Parliament to a view of the famous Castle District and Fisherman’s Bastion across the river on the Buda side. Stop for photos of the Chain Bridge, Gellert Hill and the impressive buildings of the BME and ELTE universities.
Castle District
Speaking of the Castle District, this is also a great area to explore by bike. As a matter of fact he whole neighborhood is a UNESCO site and the buildings are preserved as they would have been when first built. Why not pay a visit to the famous Mathias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. Furthermore from the top of the hill you’ll have a spectacular view over the Danube and the whole of Pest. And turning round, you’ll have the neighborhoods on the Buda side at your feet.
